Little known fact about Steve Buscemi and 9/11:

Back in the 80s, before he was a famous actor known for roles in The Big Lebowski, Con Air, and Boardwalk Empire, Steve Buscemi took the test for the Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) and worked as a firefighter at Engine Co. 55 in lower Manhattan's Little Italy neighborhood during the 80s.

The day after 9/11, Buscemi quietly went to the World Trade Center site, working 12-hour shifts sifting through the debris and destruction for survivors.

He stayed there for days. There are few pictures of this, because his concern was to find survivors, not to gain publicity for himself.

Buscemi avoided any serious physical ailments from the short, but significant, number of days he was there, but the experience left him dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder. “I was only there for like five days, but when I stopped going and tried to just live my life again, it was really, really hard,” he said.
