Napoleon came upon a sentry who had fallen asleep on duty. Instead of immediate reprimand, he understood the soldier's exhaustion, having been worn out by relentless assignments in the Battle of Arcole.

Napoleon, exhibiting uncharacteristic patience, took up the soldier's musket and kept watch over the post until the man woke up. The soldier's dread was palpable when he realised who had replaced him during his slumber. But, in that moment, Napoleon chose compassion over punishment.
