This is so offensive. Imagine people defacing memorials to the Nakba and memorials to Palestinian dead. It would be a horrific injustice and condemned by all. So why do people have to attack and deface Australian war memorials?
I know it's trendy to hate your own country and history and despise your own traditions but I am proud of the fact that ANZACs fought against brutal imperialist powers responsible for mass genocide. We stood up and we were counted when fascism reared its ugly head across the pages of history.
ANZACs gave their lives to help defeat the Ottoman Empire as they carried out genocide against Greeks and Armenians. They gave their lives to defeat the Nazis and end the Holocaust. They gave their lives to defeat Imperial Japan at a time when Japan enslaved Korea and carried out horrendous atrocities against Chinese. We helped liberate half of Asia from imperialism. This is an amazing history that we should be proud of. It is a history we need to keep emphasising over and over again because many don't seem to get it.
My great-grandfather fought alongside the Allies and ANZACs for Greece. He was captured at Thessaloniki and spent four years in a Nazi prisoner-of-war camp in Austria. Tried to escape many times. I'm proud of this history
