I’m from a working-class family. My dad, 63, gets paid daily by doing hard physical work, all sorts of work, using his hands. Today I had a rare chance to go see his work. He was carrying huge floor tiles (55.5 kg per box) to the third floor for apartment decoration. It’s so heavy that I can hardly move it. He gets paid 7 yuan (about 1 U.S. dollar) for transporting one box of tiles upstairs.

Manual workers like my dad usually stand by the street, waiting for work every morning. They would make up to 300 or 400, or even 500 yuan a day when they get lucky. Sometimes they go home without any income.

They’re making a living for their families, and in a larger sense they’re contributing to the country’s economic development.

Respect to all blue-collar workers across China. They're unsung heroes of the country's fast development.
