THE “IMPOSSIBLE MONOLITHS”
The one you see in the photo is probably the largest artificial monolith on Earth. It is approximately 19.60 meters long and weighs 1,650 tonnes. It is located in Baalbek, Lebanon, and has existed at least since Roman times, if not much earlier (there is even talk of 5,000 years, but there are no precise dates). The size and weight of this “monster” leave the engineers of our time speechless. And they wonder how their "colleagues" from thousands of years ago could have built and transported something similar.
What is even more surprising is that this monolith is not unique in the region. Nearby is the so-called "temple of Jupiter". The upper part of the temple is indeed Roman, there is no doubt about it. But the Roman temple rests on a "base" built with gigantic stones. The base is made up of 27 gigantic limestone blocks. Three of them, each weighing 1,000 tonnes, are known as "Thriliton" and form a sort of "belt" surrounding all the blocks. This construction teaches us that for the builders, cutting and moving blocks weighing more than 1,000 tonnes was not at all prohibitive. They obviously knew how to do it, without it causing any major problems.
The legends of Baalbek, allegorically, tell us that even the people of the distant past knew that "unusual" things happened there. There are many legends about Baalbek: according to some ancient Arabic manuscripts, it belonged to Nimrod, the legendary Babylonian king mentioned in the Bible, who ordered its reconstruction after the flood, and it was entrusted to the giants. Other ancient texts date it back to Cain, who founded it 133 years after the creation of man, and there too we speak of the Giants who, according to tradition, populated it. Cain built Baalbek to escape the wrath of Yahewh.
It is likely that ancient inhabitants of this region used allegorical figures such as Cain, the Giants, Yahweh, to describe things they could not understand. Even today, we struggle to understand how it is possible that simple human beings used 1650 ton "monsters" as "bricks" (and not as obelisks, as the Romans did, for example). Why did they need such a thing? How did they move them with such ease? How did they cut them with such precision?
Many people now believe that ancient civilizations existed in various places on Earth, including the Mediterranean basin, and that they were probably wiped out by climate change. The city of Nan Madol, the Great Pyramid, Gunung Padang, are probably among them. And they leave us speechless. Are the “colossal monoliths” of Baalbek also part of this list?
