Clifford @MarkLClifford , president of the Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong, former executive director of the Asia Business Council, and longtime colleague of Jimmy Lai, in discussion with acclaimed Washington Post columnist Josh Rogin @joshrogin . The talk will explore Jimmy Lai‘s remarkable journey from a twelve-year-old refugee fleeing the Great Famine to becoming one of Hong Kong’s most successful entrepreneurs and prominent pro-democracy voices, as chronicled in Clifford‘s powerful new book ”The Troublemaker: How Jimmy Lai Became a Billionaire, Hong Kong’s Greatest Dissident, and China‘s Most Feared Critic.“
As Hong Kong undergoes dramatic changes under the National Security Law, with mounting restrictions on civil liberties and press freedom, this timely discussion offers crucial insight into Hong Kong’s democratic movement and China‘s growing influence. Mark L. Clifford, as both a close associate of Jimmy Lai and witness to Hong Kong’s transformation, together with Josh Rogin‘s expertise on U.S.-China relations, will examine this significant story of our time through the lens of Jimmy Lai’s extraordinary life and ongoing impact, from his creation of Giordano and Apple Daily to his current imprisonment and role as a powerful symbol of Hong Kong‘s struggle for freedom and democracy.

黎智英，這位從12歲大饑荒時期偷渡來港，白手起家成為香港報刊大王和企業家的傳奇人物，現年77歲已成為香港國安法新時代下判刑者中最年長的「政治犯」。從創立商業王國到主權移交前創辦《蘋果日報》，他成為香港最具影響力的民主派聲音，如今在獄中度過了超過四年光陰，國安審判仍未完結。
