At some point China and U.S. would have to start talking to each other to resolve this trade war. My prediction is that the U.S. will move first not just because China’s capacity for pain is substantial; recall Covid lockdown, but also because Trump showed his hand when he agreed to the 90-day pause. We all know his pain point now—bond and, to a lesser extent, stock markets. Those pressures act on him every hour of everyday whereas there is not a similar pressure point on Xi. Also China can affect bond yields if it chooses to go there. By enacting and then yielding on his ill thought out tariffs, he weakened his economy and his bargaining position vs China and he also telegraphed to China how to get to him. It may be art of deal but clearly it is not science of deal.
