Authoritarian governments that restrict political rights and civil liberties at home should not be helping shape the international body charged with maintaining peace and security. Democracies cannot afford to disengage from multilateral institutions while authoritarian actors work to expand their influence. They must lean in, compete, and defend the values these institutions were created to uphold.
