I believe China will ultimately not enact an anti-animal cruelty law
The objective fact is this: Setting aside the powerful and wealthy elite, consider an ordinary middle-class family’s pet dog in major Chinese cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, or emerging first-tier inland cities. The quality of its lifelong food, shelter, clothing, transportation, and medical care far exceeds that enjoyed by a billion Chinese people at the bottom rung of society.
For the ruling class, in such circumstances, allowing the underclass to abuse and slaughter animals serves as a useful outlet for societal resentment while reducing the costs of public security and stability maintenance. What’s not to like?
