Across the world, brave individuals and organizations are defending the freedoms that allow people to speak, worship, report, gather, and demand a voice in their own future.
Today, NED is honored to announce the recipients of the 2026 Democracy Awards, marking America’s 250th anniversary by recognizing those advancing the fundamental freedoms also enshrined in the First Amendment: religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition.
This year's honorees are:
• The anti-war clergy of Russia’s Friede Allen
• Cuban political prisoners and dissident artists Félix Navarro, Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara, and Maykel Castillo Pérez
• The Syrian Center for Media and Freedom of Expression
• The brave journalists of Ethiopia’s Addis Standard
• The pro-democracy community organizers of Burma's Spring Revolution
