Economic growth serves the human person. Nothing in the history of humanity has dignified the poor, the downtrodden, the marginalized, and the oppressed more than economic growth. It has lifted them from bare bones subsistence to abundance and the ability to contemplate more about what it is to live a fulfilled life.
Not only that but, as my colleague at GMU Virgil Storr showed, markets (which can unleash growth) make us move to postmaterialist values (see: Teague, M. V., Storr, V. H., & Fike, R. (2020). Economic freedom and materialism: An empirical analysis. Const. Pol. Econ., 31, 1.) Not only that but Virgil and my other colleague Ginny Choi showed (and I quote them) that "markets serve as moral spaces that both rely on and reward their participants for being virtuous" (see image).
It does so because markets require us to cooperate with others and seek to understand what they need for us to prosper by trading with them.
The vice-president proposes a worldview that is entirely antagonistic to this. And in the process, his policies will make us more materialistic, more self-centered, less caring and will ultimately harm the poor.
