She rushed over, first pawing at the pup with her claws—no response. She nudged it with her muzzle—no response. Frantic, she circled the pup. By then, the fire was raging fiercely; she twisted her head in agony, trying to claw off the wire around her neck. She struggled for a long time, but she couldn't manage it. She was utterly helpless against human methods. The fire kept burning on her body as she drew close to the pup, then pulled away, then close again, then away again. When the blaze reached its peak, her body was a blurred, unrecognizable shape. She collapsed on the side, still.

The fire burned on her for over 20 minutes as she lay curled there, unable to survive bit by bit. Humans summed up her entire life with the simple four words "legal loophole."
